Why we built it

Buying soil sounds simple until bed shape, depth, bag size and settling are all involved. GardenCalcLab brings those decisions into one clear calculation so home gardeners can compare quantities and arrive at the store with a useful plan.

How the calculator works

For rectangular beds, the calculator multiplies inside length, width and soil depth. For circular beds, it applies the standard cylinder-volume formula using the inside diameter. It combines multiple beds, converts between imperial and metric units, adds the selected settling allowance, and rounds bag quantities up to whole bags.

Our approach

We aim to make every result understandable. Alongside the calculator, we explain the formula, common soil depths, bag conversions and starter soil-mix ratios. We review the site as gardening needs and measurement guidance evolve.

What the estimate cannot know

Real-world volume varies with compaction, moisture, settling, bed construction and the accuracy of bag labels. GardenCalcLab is a planning tool, not a substitute for advice from a local garden center, horticultural professional or product manufacturer.
